Frizzy Friday: Giovanni Direct Leave-In Conditioner

This is a product I had heard about time and again on curly-haired websites everywhere. “Giovanni Leave-In is the best!” they cried. Obviously, I had to try it out.

Since becoming a Curly Girl, I’ve stopped using leave-in conditioners in favour of simply, you know, leaving in the conditioner I used in the shower (trust me; it works so very well). It made me happy, saved me some money, and left out an extra step from an otherwise labour-intensive routine. However, I have no problem with feeding my hair the good stuff if it will help in my journey for length, so I ventured to my nearest health food store and decided to give this a try. Alright, let’s dive right in!

Whenever I used this, I rinsed most of my conditioner out in the shower, in order to start with a ‘clean slate’. Then I scrunched this into my hair, starting at the ends and working my way up to the roots, in typical fashion. I then applied my regular gel and continued on my merry way.

Things I noticed: my hair did feel soft, but the curl wasn’t as tight as it normally was. I tried using this a few more times, but noticed a significant difference in how my hair reacted to this leave-in; although it’s not incredibly heavy, for some reason, this stuff seemed to weigh my curls down more. Weird.

The smell was really nice, but overall, I found this product to be somewhat disappointing, given all of the hype surrounding it.  It also didn’t make sense to me to add an extra step when the previous routine was working perfectly well. So, although I can use this in a pinch if my hair ever needs an extra boost of moisture, I most likely won’t make this part of my regular routine.

Curly Score: 6/10

  • Smells nice
  • Makes hair soft and manageable

  • Weighs my hair down
  • Adds an extra step rather than just leaving in the conditioner used in the shower

There you have it! Have you used this product or any other similar Giovanni products? What was your experience?
