New Holy Grail Product

Happy New Year, curl friends! I hope you had a wonderful holiday and were able to relax and enjoy yourselves. I kept everything pretty low key, but still managed to contract a nasty cold between Christmas and New Year’s. Luckily, J and I were able to have a quiet time inside, sampling some awesome homemade mulled wine and watching some great films. It was a perfect way to end the year. What did you guys do?

I’m excited to be posting this, because this winter has been brutal on my hair. Absolutely insane. Everything has been incredibly drying, and I felt like no matter how hard I tried, nothing was working. My hair always ended up looking frizzy and dried out by the second day, regardless of what moisturizer/sealant I was using. Recently, I’ve started trying to up my veggie and water game along with my healthy fats (like my old friend the avocado), but was still concerned about what to do. I ordered some products from Beautiful Black Hair Canada, which has some  items that are typically kind of difficult to get while living in a small city up here in the Great White North. I ordered a sample of Oyin Hair Dew after hearing rave reviews, some Olive Oil Eco Styler Gel, some kanekalon hair (new hairstyle tutorials to come in the next little while!), and finally, something I’d been reading about constantly on natural hair sites: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. It was a little pricey, considering my wallet had taken a pretty big hit over Christmas season, but a little goes a long way. And let me tell you, it was worth every penny.

Wash day. Happy hair.

Wash day. Happy hair.

I love this stuff. I love how it smells, I love the bounce that’s back in my ringlets, I love how smoothly it glides on, and how un-heavy and un-obtrusive it is. It just lets my hair shine through. This is Day 3, and whereas a few weeks ago it would have been a frizzy mess sloppily pulled back into a messy ponytail, I feel gorgeous and very much like summertime Jess. This product is definitely a win in my books!

Day three. Blurry, but hair is still happy!

So tell me: have you ever tried Shea Moisture? What’s your Holy Grail of products?

    • I only got a tiny sample size, but I really like it! The next time I have to buy leave-in, I may switch to that.

  1. Your hair 😍😍. SMCES doesn’t work so well for me. I can get away with using it in the summer, but in winter it just sits on my hair… I still have a huge container, maybe I should revisit…

Hey Jess! I’m new in your blog and I loved it! I love Shea Moisture products and the smell is great! My question is how do you use the enhancing smoothie? I like to use as conditioner after shampoo out of the shower and I don’t use any more products after that, but I’m not liking the results anymore. Can you explain how you,you use as a leaving or only for styling ? ☺️

    • Hi Sofia! Firstly, thank you so much for reading, and I’m glad you’re enjoying the blog. As for how I use Shea Moisture, I’ve been applying it as a styler after my leave in. I will come out of the shower with everything rinsed out, wrap a t-shirt around my hair and let it soak in extra water for a few minutes, then I rake about a quarter sized amount of leave-in (I usually use Giovanni Weightless Moisture, but have also been using Oyin Hair Dew lately), and then apply a bit less than a quarter sized amount of Shea Moisture. Then I flip my head and scrunch my hair! I hope that helps. What specifically have you not been liking with your results? I have found I had to change my whole routine for the winter. It’s been a pain!

Hey Jess!thank you for answering me.I’ll try use this product like that.I’m not liking the results case my hair is been really dry and frizzy! I live in Brazil and is summer right now so going to beaches and swim pool just make worse to my hair,I probably have to apply more oils and less heavy products for styling ,thanks for the tip

  3. Happy New Year to you! I have tried a Shea Moisture shampoo, and although I could tell that it was a really high-quality product (and it smelled like delicious coconut!), it was too rich for my hair. But I’m glad that they are working out so well for you! I have better luck with cheap supermarket shampoos, which is fine as it’s easier on the wallet 🙂

    • I’m jealous – they totally are easier on the wallet! Although, in the past, I’ve had great success with TRESemmé Naturals Moisturizing Conditioner, which is usually fairly inexpensive. Typically, I’ll add in a pricier option once in a while just to splurge a bit. 🙂

Love your hair!!! I love Shea Moisture products, I’m currently using their Coconut and Hibiscus Transitioning Milk and the gel from the same line. The gel I don’t like as much its very sticky so I use it sparingly. But their product smells divine. Also their Deep Treatment masque for thin dry hair is so moisturizing.

I have a question for you. I need to get a haircut since the front of my hair is a little long then the back of my head, any tips on what type of haircut should i get? I’m not loving my triangle head lol!

    Thanks, Love your posts!

    • Oooh, I’ll have to try the deep treatment masque! And thank you for the hair compliment 🙂

As for haircut – depending on the length and curl, I’d really recommend some layers. It adds volume and can create a nice, more rounded shape. Make sure you go to a salon that knows what they’re doing – it’s definitely worth the extra money. If they are trained in Devacuts, it will guaranteed be a great experience! Good luck and let me know what you get!

  5. I hope you are feeling better. I too had to battle being under the weather the past couple of weeks. Ive tried Shea Moisture before, but it had a drying effect on my hair. I have really tiny coils so i need to have a lot of slip in my products and Shea didnt provide that for me. I recently tried Camille Rose Milk Leave In and the Curl Maker and I really like it. Ive also tried Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave In and the Curling Custard. Both worked well for me.

    • Thank you, I am feeling better, and I hope you are, too! I’ve heard great things about Camille Rose products. Maybe that will be my next purchase…I’m pretty sure that sute carries that line, too. Thanks for the recommendations!
